Manufacturers, importers and distributors of industrial, commercial and residential garage doors should take into account the required CE marking. Industrial, commercial and residential gates should comply with the harmonised standard EN 13241. Within the scope of the Construction Products Regulation (305/2011) this standard requires an obligatory CE marking.

The EN 13241 harmonised standard specifies the safety and performance requirements regarding doors, portals and gates that are installed in populated areas. The main intended goal is to provide secure access to goods and vehicles guided or driven by individuals in industrial, commercial or residential areas. This European standard also covers commercial doors, such as roller shutters and rolling grilles used in commercial spaces that are mainly intended to provide access to individuals and in a lesser extent to vehicles or goods.

The EN 13241 is not applicable to lock gates and closing doors of (dry) docks, elevator doors, vehicle doors, armored doors, doors mainly aimed at stopping animals, theatre curtains of textile, horizontally moving and manually operated doors for pedestrians with a door leaf surface less than 6,25 m².

Previously, powered gates, garage doors, roller shutters and rolling grilles used to be covered by the Machinery Directive. Since the EN 13241:2003+A2:2016 was harmonised under the Construction Products Regulation, a different conformity assessment procedure was established for these products. The table below offers a summary of the main differences between the Construction Products Regulation and the Machinery Directive.

Gates with specific fire and smoke resistant properties should also comply with the EN 16034 harmonised standard. The EN 16034 specifies additional performance requirements. The market operator should, however, comply with the obligatory performance requirements of the EN 13241 as well.
